Imagine for a moment, you’re laying on a warm cloud with your knees elevated and a heated pillow supporting your neck just under its natural curvature. Your massage therapist enters the room, places their hands on your feet and gently invites you to take three good deep breaths. As you breathe in through your nose to the count of four, hold at the top for a count before exhaling all of the stressors of the day with a cleansing six-count sigh through the part of your lips. You slowly become aware of the heaviness of your body, melting into the table. The music is lulling you to relax while the process of raising awareness begins.

“Oh my goodness, I didn’t know I was so sore there!” you begin to think or maybe even say aloud as your therapist invites your muscles, joints and energetic body to let go.

Massage therapy has a plethora of benefits including improved blood and lymph circulation, reduction of muscle pain and soreness, increased range of motion in joints and increased production of the body’s feel-good hormones.

“Should I get a massage before or after I float?”

This is one of our most common questions. We wish there was an easy answer; however, this is generally up to the client. Some experts suggest that floating before the massage will help prepare your nervous system by reducing stress hormones and clearing your mind before entering the massage room. With an already relaxed mind and body that has been soaking in magnesium sulfate for an hour or more, the therapist is better able to manipulate the soft tissue.

Other clients prefer receiving a massage before their float to help them wind down, have more awareness of which areas of the body need the most attention and pain relief so they can settle in and rest easier through their float. We suggest clients try it both ways and decide what works best for them.
